What is Copenhagen Open Air Wedding?

If you love the idea of saying “I do” with the sky above you and nature all around, then an open-air wedding in Copenhagen might be just what you’re looking for! It’s the same official ceremony you’d have at City Hall—but instead of a government office, you’re exchanging vows in a stunning outdoor setting. The best part? The City Hall takes care of the formalities, so you get a legally recognized marriage with all the magic of an outdoor celebration

What is the cost of an Open Air Wedding?

As of 2025, the cost varies depending on the location, ranging from 1,200 to 4,000 DKK (approximately $170–$570 USD or €160–€535 EUR). The most expensive location would be an open-air wedding at The Schooner Halmø.

When Can you Get Married in an Open air in Copenhagen in 2025?

In 2025, the open-air wedding season runs from the beginning of March (The Royal Danish Theatre's Old Stage) to early December (Tivoli Garden). Each month, there are a few different locations available, giving you the chance to choose the perfect setting for your special day.

Open Air Wedding From Photograpehr’s Perspective

Having photographed open-air weddings in Copenhagen since 2020, I’ve gathered a lot of insight into what makes these celebrations so special. One thing I’ve consistently noticed is that they’re a lot more fun and free-spirited—perfect for couples who want a relaxed yet meaningful way to celebrate with friends and family. With a minimal investment, you get the opportunity to have an officiant marry you under the open sky, creating a beautiful moment that feels just as grand as a big wedding. After the ceremony, there’s usually an outpouring of hugs, kisses, champagne popping, and often a lovely walk to a nearby restaurant to continue the celebration. The emotions are more relaxed, more natural, and more visible—especially in photos.

That said, open-air weddings do come with a few challenges. Compared to a City Hall wedding, the ceremony feels less intimate—you might hear chatter from other couples or guests waiting for their turn. From a photographer’s perspective, backgrounds can be busier, sometimes with strangers in the frame. But of course, this all depends on the photographer’s style and approach—I personally try to minimize distractions or retouch images afterwards.

And of course, there’s the weather. If you’re someone who likes to have full control over every detail, the unpredictability of wind, rain, or even harsh sunlight might be something to consider. But if you’re willing to embrace a little spontaneity, an open-air wedding can be a truly magical and unforgettable experience.

My Favourite Copenahgen Open Air Wedding Venues

Choosing a favourite open-air wedding venue is tricky because my experience is deeply influenced by the couples I photograph at each location. But if I had to pick, here’s where my vote goes for 2025:

Glyptoteket – A rare gem! Normally, you can’t even take photos here without special permission, so having your wedding in this space is truly something unique. Plus, it’s indoors, meaning no stress about unpredictable Copenhagen weather.

The Royal Theatre – The Old Stage – A safe choice, thanks to the balcony offering protection from the rain. That said, from a photography perspective, I’d rate it average—the setting isn’t the most visually striking in photos. But as an experience, it’s a beautiful and elegant place to exchange vows.
