How to Plan a Perfect Proposal in Copenhagen?

Trust me, to propose in Copenhagen it's easier than you think! Especially, if you’re considering hiring a professional proposal photographer. The following points just a few considerations if you decide to do it on your own.

    . . .

    1. Choose location

But not any location — be selective. Maybe there is a place in Copenhagen that has a deeper meaning to you (where you first said “I love you”, your first date place?), maybe it involves an activity that you like to do together with your partner? Have a think whether you prefer having more privacy or don’t mind attention from public? Your proposal should reflect you both (!) as a couple.

    2. Visit Location

If you have a chance visit location before (or at least, use Google Earth to better understand logistics). You don’t want any “surprises” on the day: construction works, the place being closed or used for a big event, etc. As an alternative, you can also ask about the place in forums / local groups (reddit can be such a life saver!)

    3. Have plan B

Always. Maybe your desired place is “clear” (open, no construction works / major events are happening), but .. the weather forecast says that it’s going to rain cats & dogs. And I emphasise the latter, cats & dogs, because little drizzle here and there is common. You just can’t escape that in Denmark! So what plan B could look like? Considering a completely different place, changing a date or .. just waiting for a few hours until the skies are clearer.

    4. Pick the “right” date

For example, a date which doesn’t clash with birthdays, major celebrations in your family, etc. Hey, you would then have more “excuses” to celebrate life?! :)

    5. traditional vs alternative proposal

Instead of proposing with a ring, maybe you would like to involve your furry friend, having a big question engraved on its collar; maybe ‘Will You Marry Me?’ could be spelt out on your partner’s favourite sweet treat?; or maybe instead of giving a ring, it could be another piece of jewellery, which grandma gifted you as a family relic? Be creative!

    6. Don’t forget your & your partner’s looks

If you’re considering the traditional approach (proposing with a ring), don’t put the ring box in your pockets (especially if you’re wearing tight jeans). This may sound strange or / and a little creepy but, take a closer look at your partner’s nails a few days beforehand. Maybe, it’s time for “pamper yourself day”? Bitten nails & cuticles can take the shine away even from the most expensive proposal ring.

    7. Consider hiring a professional photographer

To capture all the joy, the tears, and most importantly, the YES! Also, it’s a win-win situation if you feel a little overwhelmed with location choices, the best time of the day and the like — photographer has seen it all, so should be able to help you on finalising your goals & desires.

    8. Plan the aftermath

Should it be a picnic with traditional Danish smørrebrød from a nearby cafe and a bottle of champagne, or a reservation at one of the most iconic Copenhagen’s restaurant in Copenhagen? This could turn into another overwhelming task. Indeed! Scroll down to see what locals are raving about.

Picture above. To propose in Kongens Have is quite a popular option, especially during the spring season.

Secret Proposal Photoshoot In Copenhagen: Tips From A Local Engagement Photographer

    • Make sure you and especially your partner feel comfortable. From the looks (the outfit and manicure), to general attitude towards photography. If your significant other hates being photographed (even secretly!), believe me, it’s not worth it :)

    • Decide on the approach: having proposal photos taken secretly (your partner is being unaware of a hiding photographer) vs having proposal photos taken openly (both of you being aware of a photographer, in other words, proposing in the middle of photo session)

    • Introduce photographer on what you’re planning to wear on the day — in a crowded place you can be easily missed. Pro tip, send a selfie of you both before leaving for the shoot.

    • Have a secret sign for a photographer before proposing. For example, give a long hug to your partner, take a selfie image.

    • Don’t rush into things — stay on your knee longer, give her / him a longer kiss. An important “ingredient” for sweeping images!

    • Carry a touch-up kit with a hair brush, make-up and tissues. You will not regret it!

    • There are many agencies who can assign you a local photographer. However, I highly recommend doing your research (for example, proposal photographer in Copenhagen, engagement photography Copenhagen) and contacting your desired photographer directly — the experience will be the next level.
