Have you ever dreamt of getting married in the open air? And maybe even getting married in the open air abroad? Well, I have some good news for you! “Vie i det fri” (in Danish, open air wedding) initiative is back and with even more extensive list of locations for 2022. Perfect if you’re more of an adventurous type, yet want something safe and secure (aka no mountain /hill climbing involved or a missed-boat connection to your wedding on the island). Having photographed quite a few outdoor urban wedding ceremonies in the past, I have some practical tips I would like to share with you.

The full list of Copenhagen open-air wedding locations are at the end of this post. The price varies between 950-3000kr (130-405EU). For more information, please visit Copenhagen’s wedding office official site (the link will open in a new tab).

Denmark Marriage In the Open Air: Tips & Advice From A Copenhagen Photographer

Time of the day & time of the year

Majority of the ceremonies finish off in the early afternoon but some of them have time slots in the late afternoon / evening. Would you like to see the golden hour or, oppositely, have the sun (fingers crossed!) kissing your skin in the middle of the day? Regarding delays, you can always expect some, but less likely if you are getting married as the first one.

Talking about the time of year, the weather & temperature is pretty much the same whether it’s spring or autumn. Summer, of course, is the same as in the rest of Scandinavia. However, it doesn’t mean no rain. Oh, this one is never “out of the game” in this country — mild drizzle is expected at all times of the year:) If you would love to get into nitty gritty, this tool will help you to compare climate between different cities.

My take? I really enjoy late spring and early autumn weddings — the light is fabulous.

Weekday vs weekend

On a weekday, you most likely have more options to choose an available vendor, make a reservation for a post-ceremony celebration at the restaurant & get a less touristy feel of the area overall. Also, some of the services (hotels / airbnb) can be more affordable — you can be pleasantly surprised to receive a small discount for a weekday booking. Yet don’t take my word for that! For example, my photo collections come at the same price tag whether it’s a mid-week session or a weekend.

Wind

This is Copenhagen, baby! Get ready for messy hair, hopefully, not messy boots :) So, this is something to consider when styling your hair. Maybe rather than keeping your hair loose, you would do a hair updo - braids, buns, knots .. ? A second thought should be given to a veil. Even though it looks fascinating in wedding photographs, it will more likely become a burden during windy conditions.

Tip. You may experience less harsh wind conditions at the locations which are more far away from a waterfront — The Royal Library Garden, Kings Garden & City Hall Garden.

Comfort over looks

Especially when it comes to .. footwear. One more for you, girls. Keep in mind the cobbled streets of Copenhagen and sand (if you’re getting married at the beach). If high-heels is a must have for you, leave those babies for the ceremony & for the portrait session and wear a pair of comfy shoes when moving from location to location. Also, in case the weather is not in your favour, that will save your shoes. Oh, I have a story when once shoes almost “melted” because of the rain! :)
