    Nyhavn Engagement at Sunrise

Some locations need no introduction. Nyhavn is one of them — and yet, most people only ever see it one way: busy, loud, full of tourists with cameras and canal boat queues stretching along the waterfront. What very few people get to experience is Nyhavn before all of that. And that's exactly what Lara and John had.

John had already proposed to his girlfriend during a private boat tour of Copenhagen — he'd decided early on that he wanted that moment to be intimate, just the two of them on the water. I think that's a genuinely lovely instinct. But he also wanted photographs to mark the occasion, and for that, he wanted Nyhavn. Given that this is arguably the most iconic stretch of waterfront in the whole of Denmark, I completely understood. My suggestion? Come at sunrise, before the city wakes up, and Nyhavn becomes a completely different place.

Good to know. Nyhavn has a brilliant piece of history behind it — Hans Christian Andersen lived in three different houses along this very canal during his lifetime, including at number 20, where he wrote some of his earliest fairy tales. So if your engagement photos happen to include that stretch of colourful facades, you're quite literally standing in a fairytale. Not bad for a backdrop!

    Practicalities of Engagement in Nyhavn

We met just before 6am on a mid-May morning, and the timing was close to perfect. May is a wonderful month for a sunrise Nyhavn engagement — the light comes in soft and golden, the air is mild, and crucially, the city is still mostly horizontal. The commuters hadn't yet reached for their bikes, and the travellers were still very much asleep. For about an hour, Nyhavn felt like it belonged entirely to us.

We started with the colourful houses, those famous candy-painted facades that have been photographed millions of times and somehow still manage to look fresh in the right light. At this hour, with no crowds, no restaurant signs, no noise, you get to see them as they actually are. Quiet, beautiful, and genuinely striking.

From there we moved along to the nearby waterfront, looking out over Ofelia Plads, and continued towards Inderhavnsbroen — the inner harbour bridge that gives you a slightly different angle on the city, open and airy, with the water stretching out on both sides. It's one of those spots that doesn't always make the tourist lists but photographs brilliantly, especially in early morning light.

Lara and John had booked a 30-minute engagement photography package, and honestly, 30 minutes at that time of day in that location goes a long way. When you're not stopping every two minutes for a tour group to pass, you can move fluidly, stay relaxed, and actually enjoy the moment you're in. That ease always shows in the photographs.

Congratulations to Lara and John — it was a joy to spend that quiet morning with you both. Here's to everything ahead. 🥂
