wHERE IS sTEVNS?
Stevns is located in the southeastern part of Zealand (Sjaelland), Denmark, between Køge and Faxe. The region is known for its picturesque landscapes, including the famous Stevns Klint (Stevns Cliff), a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Why to get married in Stevns?
Stevns isn't just a beautiful spot to say "I do"; it's also a quieter and more relaxed place to exchange your vows. This means your wedding application will likely be approved faster than in busier cities like Copenhagen or Frederiksberg. Plus, with several stunning venues to choose from, Stevns offers a close-to-nature escape that's hard to find in other city halls in Denmark.

pRACTICAL INFORMATION FOR PLANNING A WEDDING IN sTEVNS
Now that you know a bit more about Stevns, let's take a look at the practical details of planning a wedding there. I will primarily focus on Store Heddinge City Hall wedding, as this is the option most couples choose.
Where can you get married in Stevns?
There are multiple places where you can get married in Stevns. The most popular options include:
The Store Heddinge Town Hall. It’s by far the most convenient and budget-friendly option. The Store Heddinge Town Hall is located in the Store Heddinge city centre and can be easily accessed by public transport.
Højerup Old church / the nearby beach. Another favourite place among couples is the Højerup Old Church (yes, that iconic church you see in majority of Stevns Klint Google images!). Getting married there comes at an extra cost — 775 DKK (105 EU). In addition, there is also a driving allowance according to the state's highest rate (they calculate the travel allowance from the town hall to the wedding venue and back again). Getting to Højerup Old Church will require a car or a taxi.
Other options // two lesser popular options to tie the knot in Stevns are Solgårdsparken & Stevns Lighthouse.
INSIGHT: If you wish to get married in any other place rather than The Store Heddinge Town Hall, you must state the desired place for the wedding when you fill in the declaration of marriage.
When can you get married in Stevns City hall (Store Heddinge City Hall)?
Store Heddinge City Hall accepts marriages on the following days:
Tuesday, 10am - 2pm
Thursday, 10am - 2pm
Saturday, 10am - 2pm (only on the first Saturday of each month)
There are several times each year when a wedding can’t take place. In 2025, the service is completely closed on February 17 to 22; April 17 to 21 Easter; May 1; May 29 to 31 Ascension Day holiday; June 5 Constitution Day; June 7 Pentecost; July 7 to 26; October 13 to 18; December 24 to January 3 2026.
Information last been checked on Jan, 2025, for more up-to-date info, please visit their official website.
What documents do you need to get married in Stevns?
The documents are the same as to get married in other parts of Denmark. You have to receive an approval from the Family Law (Familiehuset) that you’re eligible to get married in Denmark. For more information of the application process, visit this blog post.
Do you need a witness?
Yes, there is a requirement of at least 2 witnesses. If you do not wish to provide witnesses, the town hall can arrange witnesses on Thursday or first Saturday of each month.
Tip // Your photographer can also act as a witness.
How long is wedding ceremony in Stevns?
The ceremony at the Store Heddinge in Stevns is usually under 5 minutes. During the ceremony you will be asked whether you wish to marry each other, exchange the rings (if applicable) & afterwards sign the paper.
Wedding vendors in Stevns
Since Stevns is very close to Copenhagen, most wedding vendors will likely come from there. Having photographed weddings in Stevns for the past four years, here are my top recommendations:

How Does a wedding in Stevns look like (in Pictures)?
You can talk about many aspects in text, but let’s get practical: what can you actually expect when getting married in Stevns? Store Heddinge Town Hall is a small and quite ordinary-looking building. However, if you choose to marry at a church, lighthouse, or beach, you'll be surrounded by beautiful natural scenery. Just be aware of the wind—sometimes it can be quite strong!
How to reach Stevns?
There are a few ways to reach Stevns from Copenhagen. Most convenient & quick would be coming by car or combining public transport + taxi. The journey could also be done 100% by public transport (but longer and tiresome — not particularly recommended on the wedding day).
Uber & Bolt doesn’t exist in Denmark. Carpooling is also not so popular. However, you can always give the latter option a go and create a post in a Facebook group. Expats in Copenhagen (the link is clickable) is the largest and most active, maybe you will be lucky?
Update: Uber is coming to Denmark from 25th January, 2025
(Right) The first Option requires 3 changes (all trains). (Left) Second option requires 2 changes (train + bus). In both ways the journey approximately takes 1h 30 minutes.
Public Transport to Stevns
The first option will require 3 changes (3 trains). You can take a train from (1) Copenhagen Central (København H) station to Køge (train E), change from (2) Køge to Harlev (110R), change from (3) Harlev to St. Heddinge (210R).
The second option will require 2 changes (train + bus). You can take a train from Copenhagen Central station (København H) to Køge (train E), (2) take the bus from Køge to St. Heddinge / Stevns Kommune (the bus 251). Side note, this bus runs hourly.
The price for the journey would be approximately : 112 DKK / ±15 EU (one-way) & you would need 14 zones ticket. You can purchase ticket in a machine or download DOTS / DSB apps (see the attached). The journey is approximately 1h 30 minutes.

The suggestive itineraries are attached above.
Car To stevns
I recommend using GoMore (renting privately) Hejoscar, Green Mobility, ShareNow. You can always use giant companies such as Europcar, Hertz ..
The starting price for one day car rental, excl. fuel is (±200 DKK / ±27 EU)
The journey is approximately 1h.
Tip // Book in advance to see more rental options.
Taxi to Stevns
I would recommend TAXA 4x35 or Dantaxi. You should expect the starting price to be at around 800 DKK / 110 EU (one-way), however, for more accurate price, please contact the company directly. The price varies depending on day, time of the day, taxi type, waiting time.
Also, a very important thing to note, Store Heddinge Town Hall is in a Stevns municipality (Stevns kommune), so if you are arriving from Copenhagen (Københavns kommune), you will not be able to use the same booking method as you used for arriving. You will either have to pay the driver waiting fee (given this was arranged in advance), else book Stevns Taxis or Amazing Taxa. Pre-booking is highly recommended. In case that through all your wedding planning you forgot to book your journey back, the Store Heddinge Town Hall receptionist will be happy to give you a hand.
Tip: If you are on a smaller budget but still would love to have a convenient journey, I would suggest taking a train to Køge & then finishing off your journey to the town Hall by taxi.

Where to stay in Stevns?
If you want to experience Danish countryside living (given you don’t depend on public transport), I highly encourage to stay a night or two in Stevns area. The options are rather limited, so booking in advance is a must. A few suggestions in alphabetical order:
Anneks v/Stevns Klint (8 minutes by car to the store heddinge City hALL)
Hotel Klinten (11 minutes)
Kridthuset (9 minutes)
Rødvig Kro & Badehotel Restaurant (9 minutes)
Tusindfrugt B&B (7 minutes)
Vangeled Gaard B&B (12 minutes)
Vemmetofte Præstegård (15 minutes)
A few tips // If you are a hygge person, I would recommend booking an apartment instead of a hotel. If you base yourself in Rødvig, you will also have an access to public transport.
Things to do in Stvens
Even though Stevns is a relatively small area, still there are a few things you can do after the ceremony.
Visiting Stevns Klint after the ceremony in town hall is a popular choice among couples, photo by me @ievaviphoto
Visit Stevns Lighthouse (Stevns Fyrcenter) & Højerup Old Church (Højerup Gamle Kirke)
The place from each other is approximately 4 minutes by drive, however, if you like walking, you can also take a 30 minute stroll (one-way).

Visit Faxe Kalkbrud or Møns Klint
If you’re up for adventure, don’t miss a chance to see Faxe Kalkbrud (Denmark's largest man-made excavated limestone quarry) which is around 20 minutes drive from the Store Heddinge.
And if you were fascinated by cliffs in Stevns so much, you can further continue your journey by going to Møns Klint which is admittedly Denmark’s biggest and most surprising wonder (not my words, by the way!). To see white chalk cliffs falling dramatically against the turquoise-green sea is just magnificent! Møns Klint is approx 1h driving further down from Faxe Kalkbrud and 1h 20 minutes from the Store Heddinge.

Have coffee break in one of Stevns Cofee shops & enjoy the peacefulness
After all, you just got married — time to relax and celebrate before heading back to hustle&bustle in your lives! My recommendation, Traktørstedet Højeruplund restaurant. If you’re looking for brunch place recommendations in Copenhagen, check the post below:
