Proposing at the Round Tower
When Yonatan got in touch for his Copenhagen engagement, he had one of the coolest ideas I've seen for a Round Tower proposal. He'd made an AI video of himself proposing to his girlfriend Adi at the Round Tower (Rundetaarn), and wanted to show her this video at the exact same spot before actually getting down on one knee in real life. How cool is that? I was immediately in.
Now, about the Round Tower itself. This place was built way back in 1642 as an observatory for looking at stars, and here's the thing that makes it different: there are no stairs. Instead, there's this spiral ramp that winds 209 metres to the top. The king designed it this way so horses and carriages could get up thereβapparently some Russian tsar even rode his horse to the top back in the 1700s! These days, it's one of the most popular spots in Copenhagen for views across the city.
Yonatan wanted to do his Round Tower engagement on a Saturday afternoon, which I knew would be busy. I gave him a heads up about the crowds, but we went with that time anyway because the light would be too low later in the day at that time of year. Sometimes you just have to pick what matters most, and for him, having enough light for photos won the day.
Good to know. Entry to the Round Tower costs 60 DKK for adults (that's about $8.50 USD / β¬8 EUR). The viewing area at the top has gates all the way around, which is good for safety but means you can't get completely clear shots of the Copenhagen skyline.
If you want totally unobstructed views for your proposal photos, have a look at the Church of Our Saviour (just know the steps are really steep and go up the outside) or The Christiansborg's Tower. For something indoors with great views, there's the Maersk Tower at Copenhagen University.
Majority of observation decks are closed in winter season (January- February), so double check the opening times before planning your proposal.
It was a grey, gloomy Saturday afternoon, and I was waiting at the top of the Round Tower, watching for Yonatan and Adi to come up. I spotted them straight away as they came up the rampβwhen you know what's about to happen, you're on high alert! Being able to hide in the small crowd and capture the moment without Adi noticing was brilliant. She had no idea whatsoever, which made it so special.
Here's what surprised me: even though we'd queued for about 10-15 minutes to get up the tower, it wasn't actually that busy at the top. People move through pretty quickly, so it felt much more private than I'd thought it would. The timing worked out perfectly.
One thing to mention: it was absolutely freezing that afternoon. If you're planning a Round Tower proposal in the colder months, bring gloves and a warm hat. The top is completely open to the elements, and the wind up there is brutal. Your partner might wonder why you're making them wrap up so warm, but trust me, they'll be grateful when they're not shaking through your proposal!
After Yonatan proposed (with his AI video, which completely blew Adi's mind), we got some engagement photos at the top before the cold became too much. The grey skies actually looked really niceβmoody and romantic, very Copenhagen in winter.
Massive congratulations to Yonatan and Adi! That AI video idea was genuinely one of the most creative proposals I've photographed at the Round Tower.
