First Look Before the Karens Minde Culture House Wedding
Pascale and Merv's Karens Minde Kulturhus wedding day started at Copenhagen Island Hotel, where the couple was getting ready. Merv was already in the corridor, impatiently and nervously waiting to see Pascale for the first time that afternoon. That kind of anticipation is written all over a person, and it was already making for great photographs before anything had even happened.
When Pascale appeared, both of them teared up — and so did their families watching nearby. The whole room just went with it. Witnessing that, and getting to photograph it as it happens, is something I feel genuinely lucky to do. We took a few family portraits before everyone piled into a big taxi and headed towards Karens Minde Kulturhus in Sydhavn.
The Open Air Wedding at Karens Minde Culture House
We arrived a little early, which turned out to be just right. Guests were already there, mingling and taking photos with polaroid cameras, and there was still time for last-minute touch-ups before the ceremony began. That unhurried half-hour before things start is always one of my favourite parts of the day to photograph.
The ceremony was held outside, in front of the building, facing the green area. The timing was late afternoon, almost early evening, and the light was exactly what you want — warm and soft. The ceremony itself was short but so full of feeling. Both Pascale and Merv and their guests were in tears, and the whole thing had this beautiful, intimate quality that you really only get when the people around you are the ones who matter most.
About Karens Minde Kulturhus
Karens Minde Culture House sits in the Sydhavn neighbourhood in southern Copenhagen, on what is known as the Karens Minde axis — a stretch that also includes Sydhavnens Library, a children's culture house, and a children's animal park. The surrounding area has recently been through a cloudburst mitigation project, and the result is a genuinely beautiful green space with footpaths, small bridges, and an enclosure for horses. For a wedding backdrop, it is quietly remarkable — nothing like the more expected city settings.
In 2026, Karens Minde Culture House can be used as a legal wedding venue, and the outdoor space is free of charge. If you are looking for an open air Karens Minde Kulturhus wedding as an alternative to a Copenhagen town hall ceremony, this is well worth looking into. You can read more about outdoor wedding experiences here or visit the idocph.kk.dk for more details.
After the Ceremony
Once the ceremony was done, non-alcoholic champagne was opened, and I gave Pascale and Merv a little time to just be in it — to let the afternoon settle. Then a final round of group shots and a few more portraits of the two of them before they left for the city centre to celebrate their wedding dinner at Restaurant Anton, which is a popular choice among couples getting married in Copenhagen.
What a day! Cheers to you both!
