Gothenburg City Hall Wedding
Wedding in Gothenburg City Hall was the setting for Alina and Robin’s celebration on a gloomy Saturday afternoon in May, surrounded by their family and closest friends. Alina and Robin are a Polish and Swedish couple, and I was so happy to spend part of their wedding day with them and document the moments that made their celebration their own.
We started the afternoon outside Gothenburg City Hall, where I met their family and friends as they arrived. I always enjoy this part of a wedding day because there is a lovely sense of anticipation. Everyone is greeting each other, waiting for the couple and getting ready to see them officially become husband and wife.
Once everyone had arrived, we all walked inside together for the ceremony.
It was my first time photographing at Gothenburg City Hall and I was really impressed by its interior. The building brings together the older city hall, dating back to the 17th century, with the later extension designed by architect Gunnar Asplund in 1936. His attention to detail can be seen throughout the interior, from the furniture and lighting to the wood panelling and smaller design elements.
The main hall has a warm and welcoming feel, with soft lines and plenty of natural light. I liked how carefully considered the space feels without becoming overly formal, making it a lovely setting for Alina and Robin’s ceremony and for all the people who had come to celebrate with them.
The ceremony itself was even shorter than the ones I am used to photographing in Denmark! In Sweden, much of the official paperwork is completed beforehand, so there is no need to sign documents after the ceremony. By the time the couple arrive, all the legal bits have already been taken care of, leaving them to exchange their rings, if they have chosen to have them, and officially become married.
And then, almost before you have had time to settle into your seat, it is done!

But the celebrations were only getting started. When we walked back outside, Alina and Robin had another surprise waiting for them. A few more friends had arrived with a lovely poster to cheer the newlyweds as they came out of the city hall.
I loved seeing the extra smiles, hugs and happy faces as Alina and Robin realised that even more friends had come to celebrate with them. These spontaneous moments are often some of my favourite parts of a wedding day because they happen naturally and give you memories that could never have been planned in quite the same way.
Afterwards, we continued our walk towards Trädgårdsföreningen, a beautiful park in the centre of Gothenburg. It was lovely to have some quieter time with Alina and Robin after the excitement of the ceremony and the surprise outside the city hall. We walked around the park, took a few wedding portraits and gave them a chance to enjoy those first moments of being newly married.
From the park, Alina and Robin continued their celebration at a restaurant with their family and friends, while I said goodbye and left them to enjoy the rest of their wedding day together.
