Engagement Shoot in Christianshavn
Ryan and his partner had travelled to Copenhagen from the States, and he had one very special plan for their trip. He wanted to surprise her with a proposal in Christianshavn, one of my favourite parts of Copenhagen for its colourful buildings, canals and views across the water.
We had originally planned to photograph the proposal and then continue with an engagement session afterwards. But Ryan had other plans for the timing and ended up proposing a day earlier than we had agreed. By the time we met on Friday evening, the big surprise had already happened, so we could spend our time simply enjoying their first days as an engaged couple.
As a photographer who has photographed many proposals and engagement sessions, I actually think this can be a lovely way to do things. Keeping the proposal and engagement photos separate gives you more freedom with your plans. You can choose the outfits you really want to wear, think about colours and have a little more control over how you would like the photos to look, without making your partner suspicious before the proposal.
We met on a quiet Friday evening and spent the next hour walking around Christianshavn, stopping whenever we found a colourful building, a beautiful canal view or a nice spot along the harbour. As the evening went on, the light became softer, and we simply took our time, talking and enjoying the walk while capturing the moments along the way.
That is one of the reasons I often recommend Christianshavn for an engagement shoot. There is so much to see within a relatively small area, so we can keep moving without the session feeling rushed or overly planned. It gives the photos a relaxed feeling that fits a couple’s time together in Copenhagen.
