Most common questions on how to get married as a foreigner in Denmark
1. What documents are required to marry in Denmark?
Getting married in Denmark is fairly simple and in majority cases requires the following documents:
Valid Passport or EU ID Card: your passport or EU ID card has at least 3 months of validity from your planned marriage date.
Relationship Evidence: evidence showcasing the longevity and contact in your relationship. This can include photos, screenshots of dated messages, or any other relevant proof.
You will require extra documents in case you are a non-EU citizen and / or were previously married or have kids.
Residency Permit (Non-EU Residents): If you are a non-EU resident living in the EU, a valid residency permit is required.
VISA (if applicable): If a VISA is required for entry into Denmark, ensure it is obtained. If VISA exempt, make sure there are enough remaining days (90 within a 180-day period).
Previous Marriage: If either party has been previously married, provide the Death or Divorce certificate. If needed, ensure these documents are legalized as per the Hague Apostille convention.
Proof of Co-Habitation (if applicable): If you are registered as living together, include a utility bill or bills. Note that if you are not cohabitating, it does not negatively impact your application.
Children's Birth Certificates (if applicable): If you share children, include their birth certificates as part of the documentation.
2. Can I get married as a tourist in Copenhagen?
Yes, you can get married in Denmark as a tourist; residency in Denmark is not a mandatory requirement. Please ensure to check whether you need a visa. A list of visa-free countries can be found here.

Tip: If your priority is to get married quickly, consider selecting a venue other than Copenhagen City Hall
3. What is the processing time for receiving approval from the day you submit your marriage application?
Typically, you can expect to receive a response within 5-7 working days after submitting your marriage application. However, if additional documents are requested, the processing time extends to a minimum of 2 months. Unfortunately, there is no expedited option available in such cases.
4. We want to get married in Copenhagen City Hall but it’s booked up weeks in advance. What options do we have?
Copenhagen City Hall is the most sought-after location for weddings in Denmark, leading to potentially long waiting queues. If you wish to secure a specific date outside the regular schedule, you can inquire with Copenhagen for a special arrangement, at an additional cost (approximately 1500 DKK).
Alternatively, consider a wedding venue outside Copenhagen, such as Stevns or Frederiksberg.
5. What are the best locations for wedding photos in Copenhagen?
Copenhagen offers plenty of picturesque spots for beautiful wedding photos. I've outlined my favourite locations in this article. Please take into consideration the season you’re getting married — for winter weddings, staying in the area (e.g: Copenhagen City Hall) could be more than enough for stunning images.

7. What apps would you recommend for getting around in Denmark?
The choice of the best app varies based on your wedding location. If your celebration is in Copenhagen, where the city is easily explored on foot, you might find THE DOT, offering metro information, suitable. For weddings in more rural areas, I recommend saving a taxi number.
