Wedding in Ærøskøbing Town Hall
A personal story of Kaiyu and Stefan, a German couple who chose Ærø as their wedding destination: how their wedding day looked from my, as their photographer, perspective.
***
When Kaiyu and Stefan decided to get married at Ærøskøbing Town Hall, they chose autumn on Ærø—a quieter, more intimate time on this beautiful Danish island. The day before their ceremony, we met at one of the few cafés still open for the season to discuss their vision and connect personally. Their genuine warmth immediately made me feel like family, and I knew I was about to witness something truly special.
They wanted their town hall wedding to be intimate and meaningful, with just their closest family members present. This approach perfectly suited Ærøskøbing Town Hall's cosy, unpretentious atmosphere—it's not grand or elaborate, but it has an authentic Danish character that feels right for couples seeking a genuine celebration.
The morning of their Ærø town hall wedding began early at their Airbnb, where I captured the getting-ready moments. Watching Kaiyu slip into her dress was deeply moving—tears filled her eyes as the reality of her wedding day hit her. These raw, authentic moments are what make town hall weddings so special to photograph.
We walked together to Ærøskøbing Town Hall for their ceremony appointment. Though brief, the ceremony was filled with emotion. Kaiyu's family joined virtually via Zoom whilst Stefan's family was there in person—a beautiful blend that many couples choose for their Ærø town hall weddings. After exchanging vows, they followed a German tradition of cutting out a heart shape together, symbolising their first challenge overcome as newlyweds. Bubbles followed, naturally.
With overcast skies threatening, we didn't linger long outside the town hall. Instead, we explored Ærø's natural beauty—the famous colourful beach huts, Ærøskøbing's delightful streets, the local art gallery, and Stefan's family's hotel. It was the perfect way to showcase what makes an Ærøskøbing Town Hall wedding so special: the ceremony itself is just the beginning of your Ærø adventure.
