Why LinkedIn & CV Pictures Matter in Denmark?

As someone who moved to Denmark from abroad, one of the first things that surprised me was how important profile pictures are in the Danish job market. While in many countries including profile photos in job applications would be discouraged or even illegal due to anti-discrimination laws, in Denmark it's quite the opposite.

A professional headshot is often expected on both your CV and LinkedIn profile when applying for jobs in Denmark. It's seen as part of presenting yourself professionally and giving potential employers a complete picture of who you are. This cultural difference can be quite surprising if you're coming from countries where photos are deliberately omitted from the hiring process.

But don't worry – you don't need to book an expensive professional studio to get a quality photo. Copenhagen offers plenty of great locations where you can take professional-looking pictures, either by yourself or with a friend's help.

    Let's dive into your options.

Best Places for Professional Photos in Copenhagen

    Coworking Spaces

If you have access to a coworking space, you've got an instant professional backdrop. These spaces typically offer good lighting and a business-appropriate atmosphere without looking too stiff or formal.

Some coworking spaces in Copenhagen with particularly good aesthetics include:

Just make sure you have permission to take photos in these spaces, and / or consider to using the space during weekends & holidays.

    Hotel Lobbies

Many modern hotels have stylish lobbies with excellent lighting and professional decor – perfect for LinkedIn photos. Not all hotels have equally good lighting, so look for spaces with natural light or well-designed artificial lighting.

Hotels in Copenhagen with particularly good lighting and suitable backgrounds include:

    Public Libraries

Libraries offer versatile backdrops with a professional atmosphere. They often have good lighting, clean design, and various settings from bookshelves to modern seating areas.

Copenhagen has several beautiful libraries that work well for photos:

    University Buildings

If you're a student or have access to university facilities, these can provide excellent backdrops for professional photos. Modern university buildings often have clean lines, good lighting, and a professional atmosphere.

    Good options include:

    Cafés

For that cosy, approachable look, cafés can be excellent locations for LinkedIn photos. But timing is crucial here – definitely aim for off-peak hours (avoid weekend brunch when Danes flock for their "bolle med ost"!).

Look for cafés with minimalistic design and outdoor seating options. You might need to brainstorm a bit here because the most popular coffee places are usually busy, making them challenging for portrait sessions. For example, one of my favourite coffee spots in my neighbourhood is Alice Ice Cream & Coffee, but it would be a terrible choice for LinkedIn photos since it's always packed!

    At Home

Don't underestimate the potential of your own home! With good natural light (near a window but not in direct sunlight) and a clean, simple background, you can take excellent professional photos without leaving your house.

In fact, with the majority of my clients, we actually choose this option and pair it with a couple of outdoor photos for variety. Just make sure to:

    • Minimise background distractions

    • Position yourself near a window for natural light

    • Use a plain wall as your backdrop

    • Keep the setting clean and uncluttered

    Architectural Buildings

Copenhagen has no shortage of impressive architecture that can provide a suitable backdrop for your professional photos.

    Some good options include:

    Parks & Green Spaces

Green spaces offer a more relaxed yet still professional backdrop that works year-round. Even during Copenhagen's darker months, parks can provide a pleasant setting for portraits.

You don't need to go to a famous park either – small green spaces near your home can work perfectly well. For example, if you live near DR Byen, even the small Grønningen park can provide a nice combination of greenery and urban architecture.

    Final Thoughts

Taking professional photos for your LinkedIn or CV doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. Copenhagen offers plenty of great locations where you can capture a professional image that will make a good impression on potential employers.

Before choosing a location, I highly recommend consulting with your photographer, as the best choice will depend on your industry, personal style, and the image you want to project. Additionally, always make sure to get permission when taking photos in indoor public spaces to avoid any issues.
