Det Gamle Rådhus hotel is a highly popular wedding venue among German couples due to its close proximity to the German border.

    Planning a wedding in Sønderborg

Gråsten Town Hall has a rich history dating back to the 1950s. Thanks to a great collaboration with Sønderborg Municipality, you can now get married in the former city council hall. With its elegant setting, views of the castle lake, and Gråsten Castle, it creates the perfect atmosphere for a beautiful wedding. Civil weddings at Det Gamle Rådhus are held on Fridays in partnership with Sønderborg Municipality. Wedding times varies each year, so for more information visit this official website.

Serene & Bertan’s Det Gamle Rådhus Wedding Story

Serene and Bertan, a Malaysian-German couple, reached out to me with their intimate wedding plans in Det Gamle Rådhus. They planned to get married in mid-June and wanted their ceremony captured by a professional photographer. Sønderborg was a new area for me, and I was thrilled to travel all the way from Copenhagen to document their special day (hey, traveler here!).

The day before their Sønderborg wedding, we met up at a café in the city center. We quickly discovered that most local cafés have very short hours, so we settled in at a chain restaurant. There, we chatted about their upcoming wedding, their backgrounds, and their love story. Bertan’s family hails from Turkey, so they planned to include a traditional wedding band cutting ceremony. Bertan was accompanied by his family, while Serene's loved ones joined via Zoom from Malaysia.

    Wedding day in Sønderborg

Their wedding day in Sønderborg began with a short photoshoot in the nearby poppy fields. If you’re visiting Sønderborg in mid-June, this is a beautiful opportunity to capture charming portraits amidst the blooming poppies! Shortly after, we headed over to Det Gamle Rådhus, where the rest of the family was waiting. The ceremony was sweet and brief. The couple cut their wedding bands as per Turkish tradition, and their enthusiastic "yes, I do" was celebrated with music and the pop of champagne on the steps of Det Gamle Rådhus.

Due to time constraints and their upcoming trip back to Germany later in the day, we couldn’t fully explore the beauty of Sønderborg Castle. However, we managed to take a few farewell portraits by the nearby lake, just a few minutes from Det Gamle Rådhus. After that, our paths diverged, and I began my journey back to Copenhagen.

My Personal reflections on Sønderborg Wedding

My honest observations about weddings in Sønderborg? It’s a very peaceful town and a perfect getaway from the bustling city. It was also a lovely escape for me, allowing me to recharge my photographer's energy. I loved strolling through the fields and savoring coffee at a cozy local café (Kisslings, if you ask!). And if you’re travelling from Copenhagen, you can conveniently reach Sønderborg by plane. How convenient is that?
