Winter City Hall Elopement in Copenhagen: Tips from a Local Photographer
Winter in Copenhagen is a magical time to tie the knot. Even though it's chilly, it's actually one of my favourite seasons for snapping wedding photos. The streets are quieter, and the winter light adds a special glow to everything. Plus, couples tend to get really creative with their outfits — no need for short sleeves or follow a tradition to wear a dress (if you’re a bride)!
In this blog post, I'm sharing some tips from my experience as a photographer for those brave souls getting married in the cold season. And don't worry, some of these tips work for weddings in other seasons too!
Tips For Planning A Winter Wedding Photoshoot In Denmark
1. Dress Smart, Stay Warm (For Brides)
Let's keep it real—long dresses and winter elopements might not be the best match as they tend to get wet quickly. You could also consider a dress with a higher neck for extra warmth.
2. Elevate (existing) Wedding Look
Embrace flexibility—think about adding a matching jumper or opting for comfier shoes after the ceremony. Some couples also opt for a second, more casual outfit, adding a touch of comfort and personal style to their special day.
Pro Tip: Keep those toes and fingers toasty by slipping foot warmers in your shoes and gloves!
3. Consider Documenting Moments Prior The Ceremony
Make your elopement truly memorable — think about having a photographer capture getting-ready shots or snaps at your accommodation. This is particularly advisable for those sensitive to the cold who still desire a comprehensive elopement narrative.
4. Explore (Copenhagen) City Hall's Hidden Gems
Take time exploring the beauty the city hall has to offer, especially if you appreciate art, paintings, and intricate details.
5. Discover The Magic behind Cafés & Christmas Markets
Stay cozy and warm— add a cafe stop or visit a Christmas Market to grab a hot beverage to warm up during your photoshoot.
6. Infuse Action Into Your Photoshoot
Add excitement with activities—skating, cargo biking (bonus warmth for one!), or a trip to Tivoli Gardens for a dynamic photoshoot. (Note: Tivoli Gardens is seasonal, closing after New Year's Eve until Easter.)
Insight: the wind, though not always icy, tends to feel harsh, making temperatures seem colder than they are. Ever wondered why both "actual" and "feels like" temperatures are given? Always check the "feels like" for an accurate sense of the cold.
7. Combat Winter Elements With Beauty Products
Battle the winter effects — prepare for the wind and static. A bit more hairspray or product helps (especially if you're doing your own makeup), and toss in a dryer sheet for that extra anti-static boost! Winter can be harsh on lips and hands. Slather on extra moisturiser before your session and don't forget the chapstick!
8. Be realistic about the length of your photoshoot
Perhaps three hour photoshoot isn’t necessary, especially for just the two of you? In reality, many couples I photograph opt for a 1-1.5h photo package for their winter court weddings. After all, we're here to have a good time, not freeze to death!
