How to Find Your Photographer?
A mini guide on choosing a photographer from a Copenhagen-based photographer for both locals and travellers.
Planning an elopement in Denmark and contemplating the idea of having a photographer to capture your special moments? Whether it’s a DIY wedding or you’re interested in exploring photographer options beyond those recommended by your wedding agency, this guide is tailor-made for you. While it focuses on finding a wedding photographer in Denmark it's also great for anyone looking for inspiration.
Within this blog post, you'll discover invaluable guidance on what to consider when selecting your photographer, along with a wealth of insightful tips. But before you start feeling overwhelmed by all the photographers out there, let's sift through a few pivotal considerations first.
it's not only the photographer's work that matters; their personality plays a crucial role too.
Things To Consider When Looking For A Photographer
Your Budget
Experienced photographers come with a price tag that reflects their expertise – you won't get top-notch service for a mere €300 (at least don’t expect that in Denmark!). The quality you're seeking comes at an investment, and the decision lies in whether you're looking for a person who owns a camera or someone who offers an all-inclusive service, including photography, recommendations and guidance through the entire experience.
Food for thought. Having spent time in the industry, I've observed instances where eloping couples chose to fly in a photographer from their home country.
Photographer’s Style
Do you lean towards light and airy photos, the moodier tones, or a true-to-life color palette? The decision is yours to make! It's worth noting that film photography is experiencing a renaissance in recent times. If the idea of having your wedding captured on film, as opposed to digital, intrigues you, it's well worth exploring photographers who offer this unique service.
Language
Copenhagen is home to a diverse community of international photographers, representing various linguistic backgrounds. If you value communication in your native tongue, this is an important factor to consider. From Italian and Spanish speakers to German and Russian, you'll find a rich linguistic tapestry to choose from.
Photographer’s Specialty
Ask yourself whether it’s a make-or-break factor for you to encounter other types of photography in their portfolio (for example, architecture, corporate headshots, etc.) versus purely wedding photography. While many of us can seamlessly transition between different specialties, weddings often require a deeper industry network and connections beyond what other genres demand.
Gender and (LGBTQ+) Inclusivity
Reflect on whether the gender of your photographer and their LGBTQ+ friendliness hold importance for you. Consider who you naturally connect with (male, female, non-binary) when meeting new people. Do the individuals in the photographer's portfolio reflect diversity, or are they mainly traditional couples? Food for thought!
Tip: Don’t be shy to ask a photographer for more examples. Some non-traditional couples opt for privacy, which might limit the diversity showcased in the photographer's portfolio.

Where To Find A Photographer?
After exploring the considerations to keep in mind before embarking on the search for a wedding photographer, let's now delve into the exciting realm of where to find the perfect photographer for your special day.
Social mEDIA (Instagram)
Photographers thrive on Instagram, and chances are, you're no stranger to this platform either. To begin your search, utilize the search function and type in key terms like 'location + photographer' or 'location + wedding photographer,' tailored to your desired locale. For instance, initiating your search with 'Copenhagen Wedding Photographer' proves to be an excellent starting point. Start by aligning with photographers whose editing style resonates with you, then explore their broader portfolio. Dive into their stories, navigate their website, and remember to read reviews! Genuine reviews should have a consistent tone and pattern.
In Denmark, the go-to social media platforms (as of 2023) are Instagram, while lesser-used options include Pinterest and TikTok.
Google Search
Try searching for 2-3 photographers using the same technique as on Instagram and observe the top results. It's quite uncommon for a professional photographer to have an Instagram account without having a dedicated website. Make sure the website is informative, user-friendly, and includes clear contact information. When exploring the website, seek out a comprehensive portfolio that gives you a more profound understanding of their creative body of work.
Tip. For best results try search query in both — your native language and english
Facebook groups, forums or your friends recommendations
Unleash the potential of collective insights by exploring Facebook groups and forums. Engaged couples often share their experiences, offering recommendations and shedding light on photographers who've truly impressed. Additionally, don’t be shy seeking advice from your friends who've recently celebrated their own nuptials. Their firsthand recommendations can guide you toward photographers who not only capture stunning visuals but also create seamless and enjoyable photography experiences.
“On the street”
If you're feeling adventurous, you might even succeed in finding a photographer in their natural habitat, that is, their working place. I've had the pleasure of being approached by potential clients while I was photographing at Copenhagen City Hall. They were visiting the venue before making a final decision of getting married there. You never know, perhaps it's a case of "love at first sight"?
Reflect on whether the gender of your photographer and their (Gender, Colour, age) iNCLUSIVITY hold importance for you.
Bonus tips for Choosing the Perfect Photographer
As evident from this blog post, choosing a photographer is a task that demands thoughtful deliberation. Here are extra pointers to aid you in discovering a photographer with whom you can genuinely connect.
Photographer’s Response rate
Typically, you can anticipate receiving a response from them within 48 hours. This prompt reply not only indicates their dedication to your inquiry but also establishes a positive tone for an organized and effective planning journey. However, it's important to strike a balance – while a swift response showcases their professionalism, expecting an immediate reply within a matter of minutes may not be realistic.
Tip: I would suggest to reaching out up to five photographers, consult with each, and decide from there. Consulting with more than five can lead to overwhelm and compromise your decision.
Online / Physical Meeting Options
Consider whether a photographer offers various booking options and demonstrates flexibility in their approach. This includes the convenience of meeting them before the event, either through online consultations or in-person. Having the opportunity to discuss your preferences, ideas, and logistical details can contribute to a more personalised and successful photography experience.
Package Inclusions and Potential Additional Costs
Take a close look at what each photographer's packages encompass and be mindful of any potential hidden costs. Some photographers might not explicitly mention certain charges, such as additional fees for VAT or downloading high-resolution images.
Photographer’s Policy For Unforeseen Circumstances
It's crucial to inquire about a photographer's approach to unexpected situations. Find out whether they have a plan in place in case unforeseen circumstances prevent them from attending your event. Will they take the responsibility to arrange a replacement photographer, or would it fall upon you to find a substitute?
Photographer’s Personality
This aspect holds significant weight and should not be ignored. You can get a feel for this by looking at their work and chatting with them, either in person or online. Check out their portfolio to see if their style resonates with you and if their photos capture the kind of emotions you want.
TIP: if you want to get to know your photographer, understand their personality, book a photographer directly, not through a third-party platform.
And there you have it! Equipped with these insights, you're all set to begin your adventure of finding the perfect photographer. Best of luck in your quest, and may you stumble upon the photographer who masterfully captures the essence of your moments. Enjoy the hunt!
